“The
way I see it…we can sit around and complain about what’s wrong with “the system” or you can work
with “the system” and make things right. I have committed to the latter.”
Rosa Gordon, Executive Director/Founder
As a former foster mother and now adoptive mother of a sibling group of three young
boys it is sometimes overwhelming to reminisce of the journey my family took as a result of my husband and I wanting to help
a child(ren) that needed a home. After all, why not us? We weren’t the Brady Bunch,
but we certainly had room in our home and love to spare.
It was a journey that lasted over five years; where innocence was replaced with
skepticism, where we learned the true meaning of unconditional love for children that were “not really ours”,
where we learned that despite our good intentions “the system” can sometimes betray the very people it once embraced,
where we learned how profound the grief could be on our family when our foster children were no longer in our care, where
we learned if we remain true to ourselves good will always trump bad and the journey will always take you to where you are
supposed to be.
It is from where I sit now that I understand
that it was a necessary journey for my family to take - so we could take our experiences and work to make things better for
other families. We must continually support our foster parents; we must support the relatives and non-relative
caregivers that are stepping up to the plate for these children so they are not a casualty of "the system";
we must support our adoptive parents before, during and even after the papers have been signed. And
the best support and solutions come from those that have walked in their shoes…and it is to this end, that FosterCare
& Adoption Community Solutions came to be.
